6. Use of cookies and similar technologies i. What are cookies and what information do they collect?

When you visit our website, We or an authorized third party may send you a cookie. Cookies are small text files that may be placed on your device. When a website is accessed, a cookie set on a device sends information to the party that set the cookie. Cookies are widespread and are used on numerous websites. Each cookie usually contains the name of the domain from which the cookie originated, the “lifetime” of the cookie and usually the IP address or other unique number of the device and may therefore contain personal data, i.e. information about an identified or identifiable natural person.

ii. Why are cookies useful?

Cookies can be very useful for the operator of a website. For example, they can use a cookie to find out whether a computer (and therefore probably its user) has visited the website before. In general, the purpose of cookies is to improve the performance of the website and the user’s experience when using that website. Cookies help a website to work more efficiently, enable additional functions and provide the operator of a website with additional information about your visit to a website. Cookies also enable the operator of a website to track general use of the website and to determine which areas users prefer. Cookies help to make visiting a website easier by recognizing users when they return and thus providing a personalized experience.

iii. First-party and third-party cookies

Our website may set first-party cookies and allow third parties to set cookies on your device. The difference between a first-party cookie and a third-party cookie is who provides the cookie. First-party cookies are cookies that are specific to the website that created them. Their use allows us to operate an efficient service and track the behavior patterns of visitors to the website. Third-party cookies, on the other hand, are placed on your device by third parties (i.e. not by Us). Even if We allow third parties to access the Website to set these cookies on users’ devices, We do not retain control over the information provided by the cookies, nor do We have access to this data. This information is controlled solely by the relevant third party in accordance with their respective privacy policies.

iv. Website technologies

Our website is a statically generated website. It does not use any content-management plug-ins, tracking scripts or third-party analytics tools by default, and it does not load fonts, scripts or other assets from third-party content delivery networks. All fonts and media assets are hosted locally on our own infrastructure.

When you visit our website, the hosting provider automatically processes technical connection data (such as your IP address, date and time of access, requested page, referrer URL, browser type and operating system) in server log files. This processing is necessary to ensure the secure and stable operation of the website and is based on our legitimate interest pursuant to Art. 6 para. 1 lit. f GDPR. Log data is not merged with other data sources and is deleted after a short retention period, unless longer retention is required for security analysis or by law.

Non-essential technologies — in particular cookies or similar technologies used for conversion measurement in connection with Google Ads — are only activated after you have given your consent. Details can be found in our Cookie policy.

A plug-in is a software component that adds a specific function to our website. By using social network plug-ins, we implement certain network-related functions (e.g. like or share buttons). To ensure the protection of your data, the plug-ins are not integrated directly into the page, but a pure HTML link (so-called “Shariff solution” from c’t) is used. This ensures that there is no connection to the servers of the provider of the respective social network when you visit Our website that contains such plug-ins. When you click on one of the buttons, a new window opens in your browser and calls up the page of the respective social network, where you can (if necessary after entering your login data) press the Like or Share button, for example. v. Session cookies and similar technologies

Our website may place session cookies and similar technologies on your device. The difference between a session cookie and a plug-in lies in the duration of the cookie and plug-in. Session cookies and similar technologies generally remain on for as long as you use your browser or for the duration of a browser session. When you end your browser session, the cookie and/or plug-in expires.

The information collected by the conversion cookie is used to compile conversion statistics and to measure the success of our advertising campaigns; it does not personally identify you.

With your consent, data may be transferred to Google servers in the USA. Google is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and therefore offers an adequate level of data protection within the meaning of Art. 45 GDPR. Further information on data processing by Google can be found in Google’s privacy policy at https://policies.google.com/privacy.
